`In the early morning of January 5, Russia prevented a Ukrainian attack using UAVs targeting infrastructure in the Crimean peninsula,` the Russian Ministry of Defense said.

Russian air defense systems shot down 36 UAVs in Crimean airspace, and another in the Krasnodar region.

The Crimean peninsula merged with Russia in 2014 after a controversial referendum.

In another related development, the government of Belgorod, a city on Russia’s western border, also confirmed that Belgorod was attacked on the night of January 4 and early morning of January 5.

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the city’s air defense system shot down 10 missiles.

Videos shared on social media showed several cars on fire while windows in some buildings were broken by the impact of the explosion.

Because the outdoor temperature dropped to -10 degrees Celsius, rescue workers provided support overnight to ensure the affected apartments were kept warm.

Local officials accused Ukraine of being behind the above attacks.

Although Ukraine is accused of continuously attacking Russia’s border areas, the raid on December 30 was the most serious since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out nearly two years ago.

This raid is believed to be in response to Russia’s unprecedented large air strike on Ukraine the day before, killing dozens of people in Ukraine.

Ukrainian and Western officials said that Moscow has resumed a large-scale raid campaign targeting Ukraine’s infrastructure.

According to observers, with this tactic, Russia wants to exhaust Ukraine’s air defense resources in the context of aid from the West starting to decrease.

Russia seems to have carefully prepared for this tactic by continuously increasing the scale of missile and UAV production and attack testing in the past few months.
